Sarah Palin/The Whore of Babylon update

The single most obnoxious politician defacing the U.S. landscape today, and that is saying something, has infected my hometown with her presence. I am treating this like fallout from a nuclear blast, and staying as far away as possible from The Common where her commonness is holding forth. Apparently TWOB's mantra today (and perhaps every day Palin bloviates to the unwashed, unintelligent, and adoring throngs who traipse in from heaven's knows where to see Tina Fey's most fecund comedy fodder) features such disingenuous pablum as "Take back government."

What government did you have in mind WOB?

Who is/are the government? Hint: They aren't, as you and your whore mongering MSM media employers would have it, our "elected officialdom." Federal legislators are merely shills for the corporate oligarchy that are, in fact, the U.S. Government. Ask any of the thousands of FIRE economy lobbyists who write checks to members of both parties, and also craft the nation's legislation that is subsequently signed off on, but scarcely understood, by our elected officials. And it gets better. Lately, even the SJC is on board with the imperatives of our corporate oligarchy.

"Government has been on a spending spree" offers TWOB. Indeed, but unless you are prepared to discuss everything, and I mean everything, that government spends our money on, and perhaps, more importantly, who benefits on those expenditures-which you aren't, because you never have been- I don't want to hear one word, not a peep, from you or your addle-brained faux Libertarian supporters. Now, please, kindly shut up, piss off, and leave those of us with some critical faculties in peace.

That so many teabaggers idolize this corporatized elitist, who's obviously a typical corporate Republican, is the clearest piece of evidence that most of them aren't serious about their alleged rebelliousness vs. the system as a whole, as opposed to just against the Democrats (and especially a black Democrat).

I'd love to believe that real reformers have so much in common with many of the tea partiers, the way everybody keeps saying, but so far I'm not seeing it.

Very vitriolic, Edwardo...
I am stirring things up as usual on SuddenDebt.
I don't think it is a good thing for the country that there is so much polarization between Republican and ?? what's the alternative ?
I don't see the Democratic party as being particularly... left wing. Once maybe, but not now.
It looks pretty ugly from here, this polarization.
NOBODY, but NOBODY comes out looking particularly.. RATIONAL in it, if you like.
It looks like a fistfight. (Hey, fighting can be fun, I realize, as long as there's a play element in it...)
Are Republicans, aka, Christians, really as mindless, as corrupt, etc etc as many would like to believe ?
Somehow, it really doesn't seem all that believable any more.
There is a real culture war going on in the States now.
Hope it doesn't come to France, as one of the benefits of empire...

When it comes to TWOB, vitriol is my typical response. She deserves nothing less.

Debra, I'll save you the time of becoming better acquainted with my world view by saying that I do not align myself with either the Democrats or The Republicans. Just because I deplore one side does not mean that I approve of the other. My motto, where those two entities are concerned, is a plague on both their bought and paid for houses.

That so many Americans continue to act as if either party are capable of offering a way forward is probably the single biggest factor holding us back from desperately needed political reform.

The US culture war, such as it is, will not come to Europe. The elements that go into our brand of hating one another simply don't transfer to Europe IMHO.

This is the sort of discussion that could easily cause me to write a several thousand word epistle which I will spare us all from suffering through. However, I will say this much, the way that many in this nation seek to impose religious belief on the entire public sphere is a peculiarly American trait, that, mercifully is not replicated in either the UK or on the continent.

Many Americans, whether they admit it or not, hate the Constitution. They reflexively invoke their right to free speech if only for the purpose of destroying the document that enshrines that right. It's a cruel irony that The Constitution allows for, and it is one that is slowly, over time, proving, corrosive to the maintenance of what is best in this nation.

I'm not sure that I'm as optimistic as you are, Edwardo, about containing the American, uh... disease ( a distasteful word, right ?).
Because I say that the U.S. is the ultimate Enlightenment experiment.
What's being challenged is.. our CURRENT perception of Enlightenment ideas.
I think that one of the BIGGEST problems with the Enlightenment lies in the substitution of disincarnated abstract ideas for... Jesus, the KIng. Flesh and blood people that INCARNATE and give form to those ideas.
Abstraction takes a heavy toll on the human spirit after a while. It demands continual intellectual development. It's a lot harder to get excited about... liberty than it is to get excited about... Barack Obama, or even... Sarah Palin. Incarnation.. at least it allows the BODY to participate. And the emotions. Together.
I don't know if you understand my angle on this ; it's rather complicated.
Now that there are more posters on streetrat, I do not feel the leisure to barge ahead in my expose of structural linguistics to give y'all the intellectual tools to understand where I'm coming from.
I didn't bother to vote in the last election.
I will not vote again, I think.
Ever hear of.. taxation without representation ?
That's me...
I'm not really American any more.
So I don't feel that it is appropriate for me to vote any more, either.
For the imposing religious belief on everyone...
France has its own peculiar religion.
Let's call it... anticlericalism.
It means... imposing ANTI RELIGIOUS sentiment in the entire public sphere while self righteously patting oneself on the head, and congratulating oneself for being tolerant.
Amazing the forms that.. RELIGIOUS sentiment can take, don't you think ??
But, since the Enlightenment ideals have now gone bust, religion is making a big comeback in France.
Over some people's screaming bodies.
People want something/somebody to believe in.
And.. the Constitution has disappointed them, Edwardo. It's so... dry and dusty next to the Bible...
No.. POETRY there. No juicy stories. No flesh and blood people to be seen.
Big mistake.
Now... Richard Wagner had some ideas there for a substitute "ideology"...
MORE poetry there.

The U.S. functioning is the best evidence that the Enlightenment has exhausted itself. The Constitution, which is the sine qua non of the practical application of Enlightenment principles, has been fighting rear guard actions for quite some time, and, clearly, it's losing.

I think you make an excellent point about the difficulty we humans have with the more evolved offerings of The Enlightenment, as opposed to the carnal offerings of The Pre-Enlightenment era. The literal iconization of "leadership figures" is a vestige of the pre-Enlightenment era. It's probably just part of human's DNA to operate in such a way.

"I do not feel the leisure to barge ahead in my expose of structural linguistics to give y'all the intellectual tools to understand where I'm coming from."

Try us and we'll see if we have the requisite brain power to understand where you're coming from.
I always thought it was France.

Interesting you say you won't vote again. I've resolved the same thing.

Comparing The Constitution to The Bible isn't fair.
Find some other Enlightenment era offerings instead and they might give the original old cartoon /grist for bad Hollywood blockbusters circa the 1950s, a run for the money.

As for that bastard, Wagner, he wrote some amazing music, but his Librettos are entirely too infantile, cartoonish (Pre-Enlightenment) and long, for my taste. In the meantime, given your recent comments that involved errant comparisons of the plight of Jews under Nazism to the present day elite's (non) plight, It might be advisable to stay away from discussions that suggest Wagner had a substitute ideology. Of course he did, and lets leave it buried with him.

Awwww...Edwardo, I wasn't whoring for myself and my intellectual capacities.
Yours look pretty good, while we're at it..
I occasionally let go with a little chest thumping... (oops, should that be.. BREAST thumping ??)
After all, I spent MUCHO years, much effort, with some pain to acquire those tools that I'm talking about, and they are worth something in my eyes that goes way beyond what I've seen on Wiki to date.
We could have a little discussion right here on why I think that European and American refusal to crack "Mein Kampf" and look inside to try to understand Adolf would be much more... uh.. RATIONAL than nervously looking from right to left and whispering "my God, I have never held that book in my hands".
That's... superstition for you, Edwardo.
And we have not really asked ourselves the REALLY TOUGH questions about WHY and HOW Adolf magically managed to find so much support for translating his rant into "reality".
Wagner ? An excellent composer, I think.
His mythology is no worse than the endless B series horror movies that Hollywood cynically turns out all the time...

Edwardo said...

Adolph Hitler managed to find the support that he did-The Nazis never had anything close to a majority BTW- because a whole host of very unfortunate events came together (in much the same manner as I imagine they do in a perfect storm) that allowed Hitler, a person who in any other time and place would have been rightfully relegated permanently to the margins of society, if not the back ward of an institution to, instead, be elevated to a position where he could wreak havoc.

Debra said...

I fucked up in my last comment.
I meant that it was irrational to NOT open "Mein Kampf", not that it was rational.
The problem with Adolf's butterfly effect is that... it is April now, and storms are rather.. frequent, banal occurrences.
And the problem with relegating all the Adolfs, past, present, and future to the MARGINS of society is that...
dumdedumdedum..
The ranks of the MARGINS of society have mushroomed, Edwardo.
You conclude.
I miss yoyomo.
We used to have fascinating discussions on this topic which Hell tolerated in the back columns of the jungle, comment enabled section. Not too often.
Where is Yoyo ??
It was remarkable to hear a Jew with so much perspicacity on what was at stake, in my opinion.
But maybe that's just my prejudice, who knows ?

Debra said...

Damn, Edwardo, you've got me chasing down rabbit holes here...
I checked out Jesse's Café Américain, then Toby's Econosophy and other musings.
I will be back to Toby. Very intelligent guy. Good stuff.
Thanks for the recommend.
What's the deal with French ?
Do you have a French girlfriend ?
Or have you told me already, and I don't remember ?
(I have a hole in my head, remember I said that for future reference...)

Edwardo said...

I have no "French connection" Deb, non.

Yes, the margins are filled to overflowing these days.
Still, some folks, like old AH, richly deserved to be there. The best thing you can say about Der Furher is that if he had died in, say, 1934, the world and his reputation would have been largely spared.
