Plummeting Numbers

After a year and a half in office, President Obama's approval ratings now resemble that of his predecessor after his first year in office. Transposing the sequence of events from Bush's first term, one ought to expect that more war will be manufactured. In the meantime, the Republican and Democratic Legislature is even less well loved than The Executive, so there is no reason for Congress critters and Senators to feel confident

Frankly, this represents an excellent opportunity for those of us who choose to take stock of the situation. The sum total of the meaning of these abysmal ratings is that our Executive and Legislative branches are corrupt where they are not incompetent. They can not do better as presently composed. They have proven this irrefutably too many times to think otherwise, and, so, they desperately need to be replaced en masse and the legislative body needs to subsequently be reformed. After all, if you don't like the composition of the team, or the way said team plays, boycott the contests, and begin forming your own team. If necessary, form your own league. The solution is relatively simple, even if the implementation is anything but.

Just as by 2008 we were down to the 20% hardcore fascist dregs who would permanently support Bush and the Reps no matter what, I bet we'll more quickly reach whatever are the irreducible liberal fascist dregs who would support Obama and the Dems no matter what. Maybe in 2010.

The only question is how large a potential constituency for redemptive action that leaves, and whether that constituency can actually be mustered.

That's the question. Can the disenchanted be, as it were, redirected?

As you suggested in your own post of some weeks ago, the hope need not necessarily be (initially) for a mass social movement, but small neighbourhood 'movements' of groups stepping back and doing things differently, that can link up, via the Internet for example, and share news, developments, ideas, and so on. The way to shake off the 1000lb gorilla on our backs is quietly and patiently. In the end, we are that gorilla one way or another. It's us we're changing, not them...

Agreed, Toby.

Hi Edwardo,
Just got back from the Avignon theater festival where people are putting on beautiful shows for two bits, basically, not for free, but almost, and the companies go into debt to show themselves at Avignon.
I read three quarters of the way through Joe's most recent post, and all I can say is... he looks a little thinner (!!!), but he sure as hell is as depressed as ever.
It must be all those spirits and the trash American/Mexican TV.
That could get Jesus Christ himself depressed, I fear...
More on Avignon on the blog soon...
(That's called a teaser, I think, right ??)

In a little over two weeks I'll be in Stratford on Avon for "As you like it". I will think a while on thee, dear friend.

Arguably, The Bard's best comedy.

I'd forgotten, but, somehow, that seems fitting.
