REV-O-LU-TION!

I am posting my slightly amended response to the most recent piece over at the Sudden Debt blog.

Thanks for the heads up on yet more disgraceful and shameless spending of Uncle Sam's (our) money. Let me cut right to the chase. Going forward, the U.S. stands an excellent chance of seeing massive social upheaval the likes of which no one alive has ever experienced. Why? Because folks in power are going too far in their blatent looting and disregard for the rule of law.

So, having said that:

If there's a march on D.C. that goes right up the steps of the Capitol and into the halls of Congress, sign me up. If there's some serious civil disobedience being planned in response to the kleptocratic behaviour of our public serpents, who are almost all either lackeys to, or cowed by, private sector interests, I am there. How about you? Are are you going to tell me it's all a waste of time? Save your breath.

Here's how I feel. Do you want a different government-not just one where only the names change-then we are all going to have to trample the grass on the lawn, big time? Clearly fear, fear of the gut wrenching, knock kneed, bowel loosening sort is the only thing our elected and appointed officials in D.C. will respond to.

I'm awfully sorry, but faxing your congressman or congresswoman just won't do, no matter how often and how irate you sound, no matter how right you may be, or have been, "they" aren't going to be moved until "they" have something coming at them that looks unmistakably like it has every intention of leaving them flat on their backs and writhing in agony. Perhaps you think my jeremiad sounds a tad intemperate. So be it. I personally have no interest in getting "them" to do what they ought to have done a long time ago. I want them removed, out, gone!

If you need a floor to crash on when you do march, look me up and you can take the pull out couch in my basement. I'll join you for the march and a beer after.

I don't have any pitchforks though... But I might be able to put together 'make shift' torches from flashlights and broomsticks.

Edwardo said...

Thanks, Thai. When the weather gets a tad better, I'm going to try and gauge whether there is anyone in this erstwhile cradle of liberty who is "with me." I have really had it.

Thai said...

Don't you think the Ron Paul movement was to some degree tapping into this discontent?

Edwardo said...

Yes, and for a time I was intrigued, if not enamored of Ron Paul. But now, for me at least, the bloom is well off the rose. Considering congressman Paul's position in government, he is amazingly inconsequential-the political equivalent of a mild ripple in one inlet of a large lake- who, quite frankly seems much more interested in burnishing his reputation as "Maverick Ron Paul" than actually moving things forward. If I didn't know better, I'd almost swear he's been erected by the maestros of the status quo to capture, sequester and neutralize discontent.

Thai said...

An analysis I read in the post is that Washington is so corrupt, and so runs on money, Paul's "no" to everything approach has made him irrelevant to everyone else.

It is the catch 22, stick to your principles and no one is interested. The problem IMHO is the electorate and I have no solution for that.

Edwardo said...

That's precisely why a revolution is imperative. The whole "system" needs to be reconfigured, and it can't be done, nor will it, from the inside. That should be clear, though it surely isn't, to all concerned. Self policing and internal reform amount to a cruel joke being played on the electorate.

One of two things are going to happen, Thai, either the PTB will lose their wherewithal and the vacuum that forms in the wake of their collapse will be filled in a manner that will look and feel like revolutionary change, or the PTB will keep sticking it to their subjects until we subjects find it impossible to continue acting like subjects. As some genius observed, revolutions occur when subjects do to rulers what rulers have been doing to subjects.

Thai said...

And do you have anyone to replace the people you throw out?

The comments of many bloggers I have read (not you) has not warmed me to the notion that there are a lot of 'better' people out there.

Confucianism, which I tend to often agree with, does not seem to be a very popular philosophy today.

Edwardo said...

The only kind of people I am interested in are people whose raison d'etre, at least with respect to holding public office, is to rid the political process and by extension, government, of its enslavement to money and corporate power.

Those folks are, by (my) definition, "better people."

And to be a "better person" it isn't enough to talk the talk either, one must have some demonstrable pedigree that bolsters claims to being a radical reformer.

I, for example, have no experience (yet) that lends credibility, but there are plenty that do.

Thai said...

"To rid the political process and by extension, government, of its enslavement to money and corporate power"

How on earth would you propose to do that?

Remember money takes lots of forms, which form of money would you rid government of?

It still gets back to a basic view of what you want the world to look like and whose values win.

Edwardo said...

How on earth would you propose to do that?

("That" being freeing the political process and government of its enslavement to corporate money/power.)

I'm so glad you asked. In "theory" it's beyond easy.

1.)Change the process so that Presidential election seasons are no more than six months long from beginning to end.

-God knows we don't need to hear the same vacuous claptrap for two solid years.

Senatorial and Congressional elections need not last more than two months.

And abolish the electoral college while we're at it. It's indefensible.

2.)Finance elections publicly such that candidates have the same funds to work with.

-This, in tandem with a time limited election season, will keep the costs to the public at reasonable levels and allow third parties the opportunity to establish themselves permanently as part of the political process.

3.)Term limits

-If you know you are going to be out of a job regardless, you will be far more inclined to vote sensibly as opposed to always voting with the next election in mind.

See how easy that was.

Now the hard part, which is getting those who are in office now, and owned by a collection of corporate donors, to pass legislation that would repudiate a system that all but guarantees perpetual victory for all but the most untalented office holders.

I hope that answers your question,

...which form of money would you rid government of?

Edwardo said...

I would urge you, Thai, and anyone else to read John Robb's latest entry at Global Guerillas and ponder it in relation to my most recent post.

I hear what you're saying, Edwardo. And Thai's remarks about Ron Paul seem dead on to me.

faxing your congressman or congresswoman just won't do

Not unless they receive complaints in the tens of thousands. Otherwise it's just a "thank you for writing" form letter response.

I agree that it's going to take a LARGE throng of people marching on DC to affect any sort of change. Finding those people may be tough at first, as people too cowed by the fear of losing their jobs choose to stay hunkered down hoping that they can ride things out. But as the ranks of the unemployed grow, more people will have few options left and may be rallied to such a cause.

There are a lot of angry people out there. If they can be organized, then the movement has a chance, so long as it isn't sidelined by Joe the Plumber clones.

Have you checked to see if there are any decent sized organizations, willing and ready, already in existence?

If you need to start something from scratch, then I recommend relying on the social networking sites to get it started. I read in Wired how Facebook was used in Egypt to rally spontaneous pro democracy gatherings.

Even if I can't be there for support in person, I'm there in spirit.

Thai said...

Edwardo, I certainly respect your opinion and while I really like 1, I am totally opposed to 2 and negatively agnostic on 3.

Many nations already publicly finance their elections, I see no evidence to suggest they have benefited from this fact. The corrupting influence of money has existed since the founding of our republic, that we feel we need protection from it today has me very nervous indeed. The rich are powerful but they are no where near as powerful as they were in the past.

France seems every bit as corrupt as America from all I read in the papers (really more so if you look at the disproportionate power of their federal bureaucracy). They publicly finance their elections with what seems little to show for it.

As for 3, while I see your point, I really have no problem with someone who is doing a good job staying in power a long long time (I don't have to constantly re-decide whether I trust the individual, a not inconsequential issue). Further, I like how political longevity can act as a check on the power of government bureaucrats.

I just don't think the problems of corruption and nation building are so easily solved. Fixing corruption and influence is WAY more complex than a adding a few laws like you suggest- and handing even more power to the central government seems a very dangerous suggestion idea in my opinion. They already control almost 50% of the economy and you want to give them control of the funds to vote people into the star chamber? No way.

I think issues like corruption are multi factorial which means they also have a lot to do with things like culture, etc... America's culture is changing, and not all that change is for the better.

BTW, thanks for the Global Guerillas link. It is indeed an interesting blog and interesting post.

"Networked tribes, systems disruption, and the emerging bazaar of violence. Resilient Communities, decentralized platforms, and self-organizing futures."

I am not so into violence, I see it's effect literally every day I work, but I do recognize its primacy in life. The other topics are way up my alley.

Thanks

By the way, what did you intend to convey in when you suggested I read the link "in relation to my most recent post."?

Edwardo said...

As John Robb says, Thai, "It's a global guerrilla century." And to a greater or lesser extent that is what I am advocating as per my stated wish to latch on to any prospective political disobedience being aimed at the Federal government.

Of course the changes I suggested earlier would not eliminate corruption entirely-nothing can do that- but they are a decent start. What must also ride herd with radical reforms in the political realm is the reversal of the regulatory capture endemic in government. Orwell once asked, "Who will watch the watchers?" I doubt even he could have imagined the degree to which the watchers, and in turn their watchers, have been subverted.

I also respectfully submit the following:

A.) If you do a thorough survey of nations where elections are financed publicly, meaning one not limited to France, I think you will find that it represents an improvement over the free for all practiced here in the U.S.

B.)I don't think you are taking the full measure of the corrosive effect of elected officials holding office indefinitely. And the idea that we can just "throw the bums out" if we so choose is a canard, much like the idea that if we don't vote in national elections we imperil the preservation of our (illusory) democracy. It's just not that easy.

In the meantime, we need to rid ourselves of the professional political class. That we have such a class is contrary to healthy government and in fact has led the nation ineluctably to government that functions in a perverse partnership with private industry. In another time and another place, sans some moronic ideology about master races and such, this was known as fascism.

Thai said...

"In another time and another place, sans some moronic ideology about master races and such, this was known as fascism."

Well said!

What other countries besides France publicly finance their elections? I agree to withdraw my judgement until I look at a few more.

Yophat said...

LOL Fascinating conversation that is taking place across the country.

The questions are - How do you go about making a change? and, What do you change too?

I sadly expect it will all degrade into anarchy in the end!

Ron Paul had a cause....just not enough money or power to really do anything besides flap his gums....and most of that was censored in the end!

Thai said...

I guess it is a matter of how you think money effects politics.

I personally don't think that all the money in the world would have made Ron Paul electable if the money was only used in the election process. There is not enough money on earth to change a voters vote if the money is simply used to educate a voter but not used to bribe him.

People want jobs, lifestyle perks. People want to be bought off.

IMHO Ron Paul was not willing to buy them off once he was elected and the voters fundamentally realized this and decided to look for someone who would.

Edwardo wants a revolution to put in politicians who will behave like Ron Paul in this regard. Yet is just these kind of people the voters least want.

His troops will frag him before he ever really gets going.

The real problem is not the politician, the real problem is the voter.

Lichens will sit on rocks doing nothing else than just sitting on rocks, their sole purpose is to simply exist. The lichen could care less about anything else, including the consequences of their life/behavior/actions. Existence is enough.

IMHO there are a lot of lichens on this planet. In fact at some level we are all lichens.
